STAYING BUFFED IN A WAR ZONE
US Army Captain Randall Crowder shares a day in Iraq with FLEX magazine.

The January issue of FLEX pays honor to our Armed Forces. The centerpiece of the tribute is "A Soldier's Tale" written by US Army Captain Randall Crowder who documents what for him is a typical day in Iraq. Written in diary style Crowder details how he combines his often-dangerous duties of serving our country with adhering to a bodybuilding lifestyle. With candor and insight he states, "Although I agree with many of the critics of this particular war, I still thank God that there are those willing to serve the country that so many others seem to take for granted."

In his second deployment in Iraq, CPT Crowder is responsible for an empirically driven system for predicting enemy threats. Called a "mad scientist" by others, CPT Crowder recommends how to focus operations to keep his fellow soldiers safe and neutralize insurgent pressures.

Lifting weights consistently since 1999, CPT Crowder pushes beyond his known physical and mental limits, and he trains with likeminded servicemen to continue healthy and strong through adherence to bodybuilding principles. Although barriers to ideal nutritional intake make things difficult for the six-foot captain with 6% bodyfat, he endures the obstacles with grace and good humor.

A groundbreaking article for FLEX accompanied by many on-base photographs, "A Soldier's Tale" gives fitness aficionados an insightful glimpse at the devotion necessary in the challenging conditions facing those serving in Iraq. The January 2008 issue of FLEX arrives at newsstands on December 11, 2007, and features UFC All Access host Rachelle Leah alongside CPT Crowder on the cover.
